Memory Lane Monday #8 ~ The Sunflower ~ Review

Memory Lane Monday is a feature that is hosted by
Amber at Paradise of Pages
and

Amber and I have been talking about wanting to re-read some of our favorite books and how we feel like we never have time trying to keep up with the latest and greatest books for our blogs.  So, we came up with a great plan, let's start our own meme and get everyone else joining in on the re-reading fun as well!  We are, of course, still planning to keep up with current reads but we are intertwining old favorites at the same time.

The Sunflower
"Seek not your destiny, for it is seeking you."
In the wake of personal tragedy, two people meet on a humanitarian mission in Peru. Christine is a shy, unadventurous woman whose fiancee broke off the engagement only a week before the wedding, and Paul is a former emergency room doctor whose glamorous lifestyle, stellar reputation, and beautiful fiancee are cruelly snatched from him one fateful, snowy Christmas Eve. Deep in the Amazon jungle, against a backdrop of poverty and heartbreak, they must confront their deepest fears and, together, learn to trust and love again.

You can read my Memory post on the Sunflower here

There are so many things I loved about this book. It has been such a long time since I read this one it was almost like reading it over again for the first time.

I love Richard Paul Evans' writing style.  Many of his books use short, mostly one line journal entries to help tell the story and this is also present in The Sunflower.  It gives you an inside emotion to the character while reading that I enjoy. Both Christine and Paul were well defined characters as well as the other characters in the book.  I really like it when you can read about a whole cast of characters and know them all individually and feel like they have a purpose.  I particularly loved the little girl Roxana.  She was so sweet and I just wanted to give her a big hug.

You can tell there was a lot of research done by the author.  I felt like I was right there in the moment and learning about places in Peru right along with the characters.  It helps makes things very visual and I love it when I can find that in a book.  I really enjoyed the story when they were in the jungle.  It solidified the fact that I am definitely not cut out for a jungle adventure myself.

I also want to note the fact that I did NOT have any tears shed while reading this book.  Most of Richard's books make me ugly cry so maybe that's why I remembered this one as one of my favorites.

The Sunflower is a fast paced adventure full of characters you can't help but fall in love with.  I would quickly recommend it to anyone.

Here's how Memory Lane Monday works:

  • Each week the co-hosts will trade off with recapping when it is a re-read or what they have heard so far about the book and the other co-host will put up their review.
  • The participants can read anything that they remember reading in the past, or something that they have wanted to read that has been around for a while and just haven't gotten around to reading it yet for whatever reason.
  • Participants can decide if they want to recap the book before reading it or just put up a review of what they read.
  • Anyone can join in, just please link back to our blogs as well as add your name to the linky so we can hop around and see what everyone is reading.
  • Please put our banner on your post as well, so we all look the same!
  • We ask you kindly to follow BOTH of our blogs.
  • Most importantly remember to just have fun! :)

We will be providing each week a linky that you will be able use to link your posts for us and everyone else to see as well. All we ask is for you to put up our banner as well as a link back to both hosts on your post.

Coconut's Corner ~ The Boxcar Children

Beach, Sun, Coconut Clip Art
Coconut's Corner Presents:

The Boxcar Children (The Boxcar Children #1)

Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny, four orphaned brothers and sisters, suddenly appear in a small town.  No one knows who these young wanderers are or where they have come from.  Frightened to live with a grandfather they have never met, the children make a home for themselves in an abandoned red boxcar they discover in the woods.  Henry, the oldest, goes to town to earn money and buy food and supplies.
Ambitious and resourceful, the plucky children make a happy life themselves--until Violet gets too sick for her brothers and sister to care for her.

Hi this is Coconut and this book ''THE BOXCAR CHILDREN'' is a very good book. I want to say thank you to the very sweet person that gave me this book.  Her name is Amber Hodges thank you Amber. So now I'll tell you about the book and how I ended up liking it. It was about 4 kids that got abandoned so these people saw them and said you can stay here. Then when they were sleeping the lady said because Benny was not that old and he could not reach a lot he would be taken to an orphanage in the Morning but Jessie and Henry overheard so they woke up their sister Violet and told her then they woke up Benny and Benny was half asleep and half awake so they just were carrying him. So they ran away and the bakers were looking for them. So they live in a boxcar and they learn how to live in the woods in a boxcar . So that is my review see you again bye!

Coconut Corner is brought to you by my 9 year old daughter.  From time to time she likes reviewing books for us that she really enjoys.  Hopefully some of our followers with children in their lives will be able to share them.

Feature & Follow Friday ~ Non-Book Guilty Pleasures

Welcome to Feature Follow Friday!  This post is hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read.  This feature is here for everyone to be able to get their blog some attention and get more followers as well as give my readers a little more fun at looking what I do for the weekly topic.

This week's Topic:
What are your non-book guilty pleasures? Like TV shows, food, websites, hobbies, etc.

My #1 Guilty Pleasure would probably be the music I listen to.  Though I like all kinds of music, my favorite is pretty much anything a teenage girl would listen to.

The other guilty pleasure I have are a couple of reality TV shows.  I contribute to these shows still being on the air and I'm not even sorry.

My winter guilty pleasure is Minnesota Wild Hockey.  I get NHL Center Ice every year so I can watch every game and I have missed very few in the last few seasons.  I absolutely love this team!

That's it for me. What are your guilty pleasures?  Leave me your links in the comments so I can come visit your posts for a follow as well!
