By Banana and Flamingo
There are always so many songs you hear on the radio every day and coming up are some of the current songs that will compete for the famous title of "Song of the Summer". These are our 10 favorite songs (In no particular order) that we have listened to this summer and why we hope to see one of them get this epic title...
Florida Georgia Line feat. Nelly "Cruise"
The first time I listened to this song I didn't like it because it knocked "Cups" by Anna Kendrick off my local station's #1 spot. Once I got past that this became the first song that I turn on in the car! I like how this song is country but it has that twist of a remix. I like Nelly's part in this a lot as well, he helps complete the song.
Flamingo is a BIG FAN of this song! This is MY #1 Pick for Summer 2013! I love country crossover songs, I love songs that mix artists from different genres, and I love songs that just scream of Summer in the lyrics. I of course have to mention the best crossover song ever which was "Who says you can't go home" by Bon Jovi and Jennifer Nettles from Sugarland. Interesting side note to that: Are you aware that the only Grammy award Bon Jovi has ever won was for that song? I know, it's wrong on a lot of levels, but, I digress. Way to go Florida Georgia line (and Nelly) for winning my top pick of the Summer!

Bon Jovi "Because We Can"
What is a good top 10 list without a Bon Jovi song? This song reminds me of why I like Bon Jovi. It may not be the good ol' days with all the hair, but that's okay. I always enjoy this song when I listen to it just like I have with many of their other songs. Even though this album was just released, I can't wait for their new album when it comes out in a couple years!
First of all, ignore Banana and his snide comments about the musical greatness that is
Bon Jovi!
This song always makes me feel like I'm in the crowd at a concert singing and clapping and stomping along. Yeah, it's that good for me. I love Bon Jovi on so many levels, (who would have guessed that) but their songs are usually very lyric driven and this one is no exception. I like hearing my kids sing "I don't wanna be another wave in the ocean. I'm not a rock, not just another grain of sand. Wanna be the one you run to when you need a shoulder. I ain't a soldier but I'm here to take a stand because we can!" Read what you want into it politically or otherwise, but I like positive messages and this one is full of them! Banana is right that every good countdown (at least on this blog) will include something from Bon Jovi. Hard to find a song of theirs I don't like and this one I LOVE!
Ariana Grande feat. Mac Miller "The Way"
One thing that I like doing every year is finding a couple of new artists to like and Ariana Grande has become one of them this year. This song had me hooked from the start and it left me waiting for her next track and it was just released last week and is called "Baby I" so check it out. I love her voice and she has a good range. Everyone should be expecting a review of her debut album "Yours Truly" from The Sarcastic Palmtree sometime during the week of September 3rd when it comes out.
This song grew on me.....took a while.....a long while.....but all the same I can say I like it. I don't love it, I'm not gonna seek it out, I'm not going to say "HEY MISTER WHY'D YA CHANGE THAT SONG" but it is good. Does is scream summer to me? No. Did it get released this summer? Yes. That's pretty much why it would be on my list of summer songs but it's pretty close to the bottom of said list. Banana will more than likely be doing a solo post on her album in September since I'm not expecting much.
Carly Rae Jepsen "Take A Picture"
Carly Rae Jepsen was one of my "new favorites" last year. Most people would say that her song "Call Me Maybe" was the "Song of the Summer 2012" and I would like to say that I have been listening to that song since the day I saw her on Ellen. I love taking credit for liking something before it really takes off and that's what it was like for me. "Take A Picture" was the song sponsored by Coke on American Idol this season. When I listened to this song for the first time I was reminded of the fun upbeat Carly Rae Jepsen that I came to love at the beginning. I will say that she's the reason why I am somewhat grateful for Justin Bieber. ;)
Ahhh, the Biebs! How little coconut and I love him! He is responsible for bringing Carly Rae Jepsen to America and I'm sure glad he did. For me as well, Call Me Maybe was the song of the summer last year even though we started listening to it around March well before summer started. I knew it was gonna rocket up the charts and it sure did! "Take a Picture" is such a fun summery song I love it! I can just see a girl and her friends at the beach or on the boardwalk having fun in the sun taking pictures of each other taking pictures as girls do! (I have 2 of them, I know!) This song just makes you feel good and that's something summer songs should always do!
Fall Out Boy "My Song Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up)"
The first time I hear this song I didn't like it because it was 6:55 in the morning and it woke me up... Once I heard it again once hockey season kicked off I ended up liking it. It help raised my "hockey spirits"! I like to listen to this song when I need a moment to just rock out...
This song is AWESOME! I'm a rocker chick at heart and this song really does it for me! I first heard this song before the start of every playoff hockey game that I watched (Which was A LOT) and every time I was like "I love this song!" You can ask my people. They were always like "Yes Mom, we KNOW!" So of course I was on iTunes downloading it faster than you can say the title, which actually gave me some time to find it, (Light Em Up would have done just fine by itself and wouldn't have sent me on a wild goose chase trying to find it!) This song is one that even though I have heard it a million times I could still listen to it a million more and I honestly hope that the NHL or even just the MN Wild adopt it for their song this coming season as I can't get enough of it!
Justin Timberlake "Mirrors"
I was a little hesitant to give this song a shot because his single "Suit and Tie" made me change the radio station immediately. Once I ended up listening to the original, after I saw a cover on YouTube (which you can check out here), I was like "THIS is JT?!" and we ended up buying it about a week later... I like this song because it has that beat that I like in a song at it's the only song on the album "The 20/20 Experience" that doesn't sound like it took a time machine from 1972 to now.
Okay yeah, I saw *NSYNC in the 90's. I was a fan......I am a fan.....of *NSYNC. Justin Timberlake, not so much. I don't like a single thing he has done since leaving the band, until Mirrors. This song took about 3 times listening to it and then the decision was made that yes......I finally liked something JT! I believe he is a talented artist, he just isn't for me (most of the time he sounds like someone is pinching a goat) but mirrors would probably be my
"slow song" pick of the summer.
Imagine Dragons "Radioactive"
I didn't really know what this song was until after I saw "The Host" and heard this awesome song in the credits. I searched and searched the internet to find out what this song was because they didn't have it on the soundtrack on iTunes. I had never heard of Imagine Dragons until then so it was fun to find a new artist as usual. I listen to this song because it has that "apocalyptic" feel to it.
So this summer has been fun. We went to the beach, we started a REALLY COOL blog, and we learned to play guitar (me, Banana and the 12yo who will now be know as Tucan) This is the first song I could actually play all the chords to (there are only 4 main ones) and if I have the music playing along it almost sounds like the song! This song is another that I never get tired of. I can listen to it over and over and it never gets old. I am very hopeful that I will like more of the Imagine Dragons offerings in the future. They have a whole lot of potential and I understand they put on a good show as well.
One Direction "Kiss You"
The first time that I listened to this song it was a cover done by a group called The Gardiner Sisters, who I like a lot because I love harmony that's done well. This is probably the ONLY song by One Direction that I will ever willingly listen to. This song has that nice upbeat feel that I like in a song.
One Direction is another one of Coconuts favorites. She keeps me in the know on the boy bands! I like most of their stuff at least minimally and Kiss You is one that won me over pretty quick. I can work out to it too which is always a good bonus. Fun, peppy and a good time are all things that come to mind when I hear this song. I also like The Gardiner Sisters version of this song and if you would like to see their video you can click the link here.
Austin Mahone "What About Love"
I threw Flamingo a bone and let this song on the list. That being said, this is the ONLY song of his that I allow to be played within my earshot otherwise I'd explode. Although he's friends with Taylor Swift so he has potential. ;) If I had to choose a song to put here it would probably either be "Love Somebody" by Maroon 5 or "Cups" by Anna Kendrick!
Are you a Mahomie? Apparently I am, cuz I like me some Austin Mahone! He is the latest and greatest on Coconuts playlist (and on her bedroom wall) What about love is a great tune. Everything I have already described on this post. I heard a couple times and was like "is this 1D? No. Who is it? Oh yeah, it's that Mahone kid! I honestly think that Austin Mahone is one name we haven't heard the last of. I like his music and think its going to sell well with the younger crowd. I look forward to an album from him and I'm fairly sure I will be the one reviewing it, not Banana!
(Although I'm sure he will have something to say about it.)
Taylor Swift "22"
(We had to start and end the list with really good country songs)
I was so relieved to hear a different song of her's that didn't talk about trouble... I always knew that this song would be a hit for her... probably before lots of people did. This song has always been a fun song to listen to and every time I listen to it, it makes me wanna have a huge party with all my friends and jump in a pool like in the music video. So if you haven't done so yet, go out and buy Taylor Swift's new album "Red" because it's a lot better than the rest of her albums.
Until about the last year I was NOT a fan of Taylor Swift. To be fair, I hadn't really listened to much of her stuff on a regular basis. I actually really like her now and I would say besides the title song "Red", "22" is my favorite on the album. It's so much fun and once again I can see a bunch of kids just having a fun time, hanging out and doing whatever when I listen to it. It brings me back to being young and although I was married before I was 22, I still acted crazy with friends in college and had a great time dancing and just having fun. This is a great summer song!
There you have it! That's our Top 10 Songs of the Summer! Let us know what you think... Do you agree? Do you not agree? What would you change on the list? What did you think of the cover songs we mentioned? We want to hear from you! :D
